Dame Janet Trotter DBE (Lord Lieutenant of Gloucestershire) today dedicated the Bradley Stoke war memorial.

Members of 1st Bradley Stoke Scout Group, Royal British Legion, St John’s Ambulance Cadets, 1st Bradley Stoke Rainbows, 2nd Patchway Scout Group and Police Cadets marched from the Jubilee Centre to the town square at the Willow Brook centre where the memorial dedication took place.

Katherine Robinson (Beaver Scout Leader) started proceedings by welcoming Dame Janet Trotter and Rev Simon Jones (Area Dean for Kingswood & South Gloucestershire) and then went on to describe the special meaning behind this memorial DSCF1349bin the year we are commemorating the outbreak of WW1.

Dame Janet Trotter dedicated the memorial and it was then blessed by Rev Simon Jones. After the sounding of the Last Post and observing a two minutes silence Scouts, Cubs, Beavers and Rev Paul Hinkley (Vicar of Bradley Stoke) came to the stage to express what Remembrance means to them.  The ceremony was then brought to a close by Brian Hewitt MBE (President of the Stoke Gifford Branch of the Royal British Legion).

After the ceremony children were invited to light candles around the memorial to mark 100 years since the outbreak of World War 1 when the then British foreign secretary, Sir Edward Grey, famously remarked: “The lamps are going out all over Europe; we shall not see them lit again in our lifetime.”
